§1 An introduction to (undirected) networks
Networks are used to describe many real-world phenomena such as the interaction within social structures and the mapping of transport links connecting cities. Throughout this section, we shall introduce the fundamental concepts of network theory.
For the purposes of this section, we shall solely discuss undirected networks. You do not need to know what undirected means at this stage.
1.1 Adjacency matrix
A definition of the adjacency matrix, illustrated with examples.
1.2 Incidence matrix
A definition of the incidence matrix, complete with an example.
1.3 Node degree
Defining the degree of a node.
1.4 Node degree distribution
The probability distribution of choosing a node with degree k out of all possible nodes.
